Confused about whether or not you should go engagement ring shopping together? Well, a perfectly reasonable way to address the elephant in the room is to talk about it.

Generally speaking, a lot of social pressure comes with buying an engagement ring. Is there a minimum amount you need to spend? Does the stone need to be at least a certain size? Will she even like this design?

Let’s talk about a few of these things.

Speaking to your partner about the ring can help alleviate pressure, and find something that suits you both.

This is an important purchase, but for different reasons

I think a lot of confusion comes from the fact that this is an important purchase. If diamonds are a girls best friends, then where does that put an engagement ring? Right up there, no? “I think most men feel pressure of buying the perfect engagement ring. It’s a tool to sweep a woman off her feet, right?! But that’s the wrong way of looking at it”, says our founder Akshay Sethi.

Choose from a plethora of options available in the market. Engagement ring shopping can be fun together!

Sure women like diamonds. But the “Diamonds are a woman’s best friend” is dated, and frankly kind of sexist. Diamonds are all kinds of amazing, and you should buy an engagement ring to profess your love. But honestly, let women have other humans for best friends.

And while a woman will definitely appreciate a magnificent, big rock for an engagement ring, that’s not the only way to sweep her off her feet. I mean, if you’re planning to get married, chances are you’ve already swept her off her feet, no?

The reasons why this is an important purchase

It’s a symbol of your love and it should be beautiful.

It’s something you’ll live with for your lifetime - so it should be beautiful.

It’s a high involvement purchase - each person has their own tastes.

It’s a high value purchase - so you should try to get it right.

Change the way you think about an issue, and the issue changes. Now that you’re thinking right, here’s how you should proceed.

Don’t feel pressurised by a price tag

There is no one budget that fits all. In our experience, people spend between ₹60,000 to ₹25,00,000 on an engagement ring. But you shouldn’t be looking at these figures. What you should be looking at is:

  1. What are you capable of spending
  2. What kind of engagement ring do you want to buy

If you’re worried that your partner may go overboard while purchasing a ring, casually caution against it. Make up a situation, or “take the help of a friend”. Something like “You know I was speaking to my friend the other day. She said that they spent maybe a bit too much on their wedding rings. And would’ve preferred to have a bigger budget for the wedding/ honeymoon instead”.

If, on the other hand, you want to be surprised, but are particular about what you want in a ring, pass on the message through a friend or a family member. Ask them to get more involved with your partner and help them with the purchase. This would keep the element of surprise intact, but also ensure that you get what you want in your engagement ring.

Keep your communication channels open on this subject. And spend as much as you’re comfortable with. There’s no point going into debt to buy your engagement ring.

Zara solitaire ring with wedding bands

Buy a Wedding Band for now

A lot of young couples prefer to keep it simple. Instead of splurging on a solitaire ring, they choose to buy a wedding band that they can wear every day. A few years later, once they’re earning higher incomes, they go back and purchase a wedding ring that complements the band perfectly. This is perfectly fine too.

I think what we’re trying to say is that there is no one way of approaching this. Each couple is different. You do you!
